Four Engine Noises that Require Immediate Attention

Four Engine Noises that Require Immediate Attention

Technicians are quite knowledgeable when it comes to all of the various noises that an engine can make. Some noises are perfectly normal, though they may come and go. There are other noises that are a cause for concern. If you hear something that is out of the norm for your specific vehicle, then it is time to bring your vehicle into a service center to have it checked out. Any issue with your vehicle should never be ignored, because this can lead to some pretty catastrophic issues in a very short amount of time. It is important to remember that a minor repair that is easy to take care of now can become quite an expensive issue in just a few short weeks. Let’s take a look at some of the most common engine noises that require immediate attention.

SQUEALING OR CHIRPING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE

If your vehicle squeals upon accelerating or when you first start it, the most likely cause is a loose or worn accessory belt. It could also be a worn bearing or pulley on either a belt tensioner or an accessory, such as the alternator, power steering pump, or air conditioner compressor.

WHEN YOU TURN, YOU HEAR A POPPING, SNAPPING, OR CLICKING SOUND

If you have an all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive vehicle, this is a problem sound. If you hear these sounds only during a turn, then the constant velocity (CV) joints need replacing on your front axle. One or both joints might need attention. Do not ignore this sound. A broken axle joint could occur while driving in heavy traffic, at high speeds, when stopped at a light or at any time. If this joint breaks, the engine will no longer be able to send power to the wheels. Most shops will replace the entire axle with a new or remanufactured axle, which will include two new or remanufactured joints with it as an assembly. This saves the shop time, which saves you money, and all parts are now “fresh.” Most joints will give some warning before they break, but get this looked at as soon as possible.

GRINDING NOISES

If you hear your engine grind when you start your vehicle, then you need to get the starter motor checked. It might just need adjusting, but cccasionally, the starter motor needs a replacement.

RATTLING, SPUTTERING OR RUMBLING NOISES

When you hear rattling noise from somewhere near your engine, it may not come from your engine at all. That sputtering sound and loud rumbles might indicate your exhaust system has a hole in it. Typically, a simple solution like attaching a new muffler, replacing corroded pipe sections, or tightening and reattaching loose pipes will fix the problem.
